If you’ve seen the movie Skyfall or visited the Scottish Highlands, you may have been struck by the barren hills and seemingly lifeless landscapes. Surprisingly, these “stunning” places are largely the result of human activity. During medieval times, around 80% of Scotland was covered in woodlands. Today, that figure has dwindled to just 19%, with only 4% consisting of native woodlands. The remaining 15% is primarily made up of commercial forestry plantations.
At Starfish Travel, we highlight various efforts in reforestation, habitat restoration, and peatland preservation. We also explore how these initiatives connect to modern Scottish life and industries, including the iconic whisky industry.

These opportunities allow you to experience Scotland’s landscapes from a unique perspective while connecting with its rich traditions, vibrant culture, and welcoming people.

Highlands Rewilding offer corporate retreats but also experiences such as rewilding and wildlife walks. Scotland the Big Picture provide rewilding journeys.
There are also very small enterprises such as Lynebreck Croft, who offer 3hrs tours, as well as courses how to farm sustainable, how to grow and on wild medicine
Forestry and Land Scotland invite you to visit but also provide numerous activities, such “treetop experiences”. Trees for life have a rewilding centre and invite to stay.
Corrour Estate offers visitors the fantastic arrival by train, the highest station in Britain followed by a lot of empty space and numerous rewildind efforts, again you can stay and they offer various activities too.
Obviously you can simply emerge yourself into Scotland landscapes and learn as you go.
